Narwal Freo X Ultra

The Freo X Ultra, a highly-rated and highly-functional Gen 4 robotic vacuum and mop is a high-quality machine. The $1,400 list price is a bit steep however, you can find it for sale frequently enough to make the purchase more appealing. The unit looks fantastic and the base occupies very small space in the corner of your home.

The design of this robot addresses some of the issues we've encountered with other robotic vacuum and mop units, such as the brushes getting tangled in hair, and the brush being unable to reach bare floors underneath furniture. The sweeping performance on carpets and bare floors is also impressive. The vacuum/mop features a high level debris pickup and the mop will quickly soak up bare floors.

The mops also use a smart system to clean around the edges of walls and around furniture. The robot is able to effortlessly avoid obstacles like food bowls, toys, and backpacks. It is able to get tangled or get stuck with smaller, more compact objects such as shoelaces, USB cables, and pens.

We used this robot to vacuum and mop a mix of pile rugs, FLOR carpet tiles, and hardwood floors within a large, open floor plan. With FREO Mind enabled, it vacuumed and mopped the 90m2 area in just 170 minutes, which is close to average for Gen 4.

Several features distinguish this robot from other robots in its class. The Freo X Ultra has a number of software, sensors, and hardware improvements engineered to keep it at the top of its category. It has been declared to have an autonomy of 3.5 hours in environments up to 260m2.

You can customize multiple functions with the Freo app, such as how often the robot comes back to the base station the frequency of mopping, as well as power (silent or smart) and its mopping humidity. The app is able to identify areas with a lot of dirt and devise a streamlined cleaning route, and dispensing detergent or raising the pads on carpet.

Other impressive features include a fast charging battery, a clear display on the robot's bottom and a practical dock door that opens easily. The Freo X Ultra vacuum and mop is ideal for apartment and home owners who want to reduce their chores and keep their homes tidy.

Miele Scout RX3

Miele has a track record of quality and innovation in the field of robot vacuuming. The new Miele robot is designed to take cleaning performance to a whole new level with its innovative features.

The RX3 features a dual-suction technology smart mapping system that includes 3D mapping and a camera which transmits live images to your smartphone. The powerful four-stage cleaning system offers excellent dust pickup on carpet and hard floors, while intuitive side brushes with a swing-out feature and two suction channels clean in corners. The 8.5 cm height allows it to fit under low furniture, while front cameras and infrared sensors help it navigate around obstacles and thresholds with ease.

In our test of how it cleaned baking soda near baseboards and in corners the Scout RX3 was impressive. Its suction of 2,500Pa was weaker than the other robots, however it was still quiet and moved quickly.  robotvacuummops  did not mop and its removable cleaning pad was difficult to attach. It also wasn't able to handle dirt that was dried on.

Its app is a little basic, lacking advanced features like multiple cleaning modes and automated scheduling. It supports Alexa but its voice controls aren't intuitive or responsive. It's also flaky when it comes to returning to the charging station after a run -- other robots can follow a previous route or sensibly follow a wall until they get to their home however, the RX3 just bumbles about until it gives up and then sends a message about failure to your phone.

We also had issues with the smart features of the device, namely its mapping feature as well as digital stay-out zones. While it did a good job of keeping away from our shoes and furniture legs, it got easily stuck by socks and cables, and was unable to handle the tassels that adorn carpets. This is the reason we decided not to include it in our Best Buy list. Still, with a decent price tag and impressive performance it's a Scout RX3 is worth considering when you're looking for an alternative to the traditional uprights.
